The problem of Lightning – people have already started to use it

Impatience in waiting for Lightning Network has led to a massive influx of bitcoin transactions in the network, despite warnings from developers that the network is working in test mode.

“The test network is not so fast,” said the representatives of the VPN service TorGuard after the announcement to accept payments in Lightning.

They are not alone – Blockstream has launched a store just for the Lightning with its own implementation option – “c-lightning”. And principal investigator of the network Lightning suggested that using Lightning Network was held in bitcoin transaction worth over $ 33,000.

Such excitement is not hard to explain. Off-chain technology promises near-instant transaction speed with greatly reduced Commission. Many of her supporters believe that the use of this network in the core network of the bitcoin, unlike the test network, accelerate time to prepare Lightning Network to the rush hour.

“I believe that now is the time to start the Lightning Network, despite its imperfections. It will be the best way to strengthen it,” wrote one Twitter user.

But the use of the network under development not only led to doubts about its readiness. Because of this, several people lost their bitcoins. As a result, the decision was criticized by Blockstream, and some even called the opening of channels in the Lightning with hundreds and thousands of dollars in bitcoins “crazy.”

In spite of the constant warnings, the options for the implementation of the core network Lightning already contain 205 units and 548 of the TV and the slowdown is not expected.

According to the developers, this momentum slows down the speed at which it is safe to use Lightning in the core network of bitcoin.

According to Pierre-Marie Paydu, Lightning developer for a startup ACINQ:

“In recent years, more and more users configures their software to the core network. Some of them believe that the deployment of the Lightning Network somehow happen faster.”

The diversion developers

But the problem is not just that.

In a recent interview with Elizabeth stark, the head of the Lightning Labs, approx noted that the number of developers Lightning Network is just ten people, and this is a factor that may slow down the launching technology. Probably because of such shortfalls Lightning Labs has appealed to users with a request to stop send money through the system, noting that it was “excessive diversion developers”.

“Many people want to get into the main network, and it is difficult to explain that she’s not ready, and that they should try a test network,” said Alex Bosworth, the developer of Lightning. “I don’t recommend using the primary network, if you do not test and not fully aware of what they do.”

According to Bosworth, who is working on two nodes of a core network, one of the problems which may face the developers of Lightning in the release version the core network is the need for backward compatibility to future releases compatible with the current prototypes in development.

In the case of continued development of the emerging core network (in the last 72 hours the number of nodes it has doubled), this can lead to “slow development”, because developers will have “to worry about maintaining backwards compatibility with previous versions,” explained Bosworth.

But, despite all this, apparently active use does not cease.

“We plan to support all our nodes Lightning Network is constantly in working condition to support the network,” said Ben van pelt, TorGuard CEO.

This coincides with the statements of the user Lightning David R. Sterry in defense of the active use of the network, which is in development. He said that the criticism “is not unanimous” and added that if “the developers really against it, they could impede such use”.

He also noted that “some problems can only be detected with real money.”

During testing we discovered a few errors.

According to International Business Times, the deployment of technology in Blockstream led to the discovery of 20 errors in the first 14 hours after launch. And Ben van pelt, TorGuard CEO, said that the company discovered several errors in that time, but none of them resulted in the loss of user’s money.

In this respect, scientific Director Blockstream Samson MOU wrote on Twitter:

“Using Lightning Network in the core network is not only fixing bugs, stickers and recklessness. It is also a study of the problems of usability that could be taken into account”.

But Paydu believes that it misses an important point, since, when the network operates, “each detected error will be much more costly in terms of resource use and development. So on the way to a stable and working Network Lightning rush not to speed up development.”

Active network “creates more pressure and distractions and so a small number of people who develop”, — he explained, adding:

“We should not forget that the developers are the scarcest resource”.
